Quick play — staked head-to-head
The fastest way in: pick a stake from the lobby, tap an online player (or let matchmaking find one), and play a single hand of Matatu. Winner takes the pot minus a small table charge. Stakes run from free practice tables up to high-stake games for the confident.
Battles — best-of series you host
A battle is your own standing challenge: choose a stake and a format — best of 3, 5, 7 or 9 — and it appears in the lobby for anyone to accept. Battles reward consistency over luck: one bad deal won't sink you, but the series winner takes everything.
Tournament brackets
Tournaments climb stage by stage — qualifiers, knockout rounds, quarter-finals, semis and the final. Win and you advance; lose and you restart from stage one, so every match matters. Reaching the end of the bracket pays the grand prize.
Knockout chambers
The knockout chamber is Matatu's pressure cooker: rounds are played to a score cap. Every time a round ends, the cards left in your hand are counted — using the same values as a cut round — and added to your running total. Hit the cap and you're eliminated; the last player standing wins the staked pot.
Chamber tip: in a knockout, dumping your expensive cards early is often worth more than winning the round — a hand caught holding a Joker adds 50 to your total in one blow. More in strategy.
Fair play, guaranteed by the server
Every online deal is shuffled and every move validated server-side. Nobody — including us — can see your hand, stack the deck, or replay a move. Disconnections pause your seat and reconnect you to the same game.
Your results feed the league leaderboard and seasons, and you can warm up for any format against the AI first.
